Quality city greening involves
the combined efforts of professionals including: landscape
architects, horticulturists, botanists, engineers, architects
and planners etc. in a holistic approach in stages from planning,
design, construction to maintenance.
In Hong Kong, landscape architects have begun to take part
in urban greening and new town development since 1970's. Recently,
as the public are more concerned about their living quality
and the environment, landscape architects have been playing
an increasingly important role in a wide variety of projects.
Improvement in Living Quality
Landscape architects are responsible for large scale open
space projects such as urban parks, town parks and promenades
to provide recreation facilities and urban oases for the public.
Increasing Public Environmental Concern
Landscape architects aim at achieving the balance between
the environmental concern and the development as seen in works
in the reinstatement of slope and drainage channel by greening,
and the construction of a wetland park.
Economic and Tourism Development
In the development of tourist attractions, landscape architects
play an important role in a wide range of projects such as,
improvement of streetscape; development of pedestrianised
areas, heritage trails, theme parks and hotels to promote
and enhance the image of Hong Kong as an international city.
