To promote a greener environment and increase tenants' knowledge and interests in greening, the Housing Department Horticulture Team has organized tree planting activities in various housing estates since 1999. The message of the love and care for the trees and saplings is disseminated to tenants through tree planting activities. This year, three estates have joined in the tree planting activities. They are Tze Lok Estate, Wah Fu (I) Estate and Yau Oi Estate. The Housing Department Horticulture Team together with the Estate Management Advisory Committee and the tenants plant trees in the housing estates to add more green and vitality to the estates. The Horticulture Team members not only brief the tenants on the various planting methods but also demonstrate how to plant a tree and distribute small plants to the tenants to encourage them to green the environment starting from their homes. Exhibition panels on common plants and flowers in housing estates are also displayed to promote greenery among residents. Apart from this, in order to raise the standard of the gardening maintenance in housing estates, the Horticulture Team has also arranged a training course for 22 senior technicians in the Housing Department for increasing their knowledge and interests towards gardening. The content of the course includes gardening maintenance management, gardening design, gardening machine operation and maintenance, tree preservation and the laws of tree protection etc. Looking ahead, the Housing Department Horticulture Team and the environmental working groups in the Housing Department will continue to join hands with the tenants to promote the messages of greening our environment and to organize a wide range of environmental work in the housing estates in future. by Dr Katherine Yau Housing Authority July 2002
