The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) had recently
taken part in the Fifth China Flower Exposition, which was
jointly presented by the China Flower Association and the
Guangdong Provincial Government. The Exposition was organised
in conjunction with the Third China Flower Trade Fair at the
Chencun "World of Flowers" in Shunde from 28 September
to 7 October, 2001 with the theme of "Flower of the Century".
Exhibits included landscape displays, bonsai type plants,
flower arrangements, dry flowers, tree seedlings, seeds, fertilizers,
pesticides and horticultural machineries, etc. The opening
ceremony of the Exposition was held on 28 September 2001.
Mr Zhou Tienong, Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People's Political
Consultative Committee; Mr Bu He, Vice-Chairman of the National
People's Congress and Ms Ziang Zehui, President of the China
Flower Association officiated at the Ceremony together with
the representatives of all participating provinces and cities
(See photograph 1).
According to the Organizing
Committee, a total of 31 provinces and cities (including Hong
Kong) and 20 private firms from overseas countries (including
Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and USA) participated
in the event, and some 1.08 million visitors attended the
Exposition during the 10-day show period.
The LCSD took part in the Exposition by
staging a 50 M2 indoor exhibition and a 500 M2 outdoor garden
display on behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region Government (HKSARG). The indoor booth provided general
information about greening initiatives and vegetation of Hong
Kong, while the outdoor display featured a western style garden
with the theme of "Hong Kong Garden Plants". The
HKSARG display comprised five major components, namely a Roman
style gateway, an air-conditioned exhibition gallery for providing
information about Hong Kong's greening efforts as well as
information on the plant species in the display, a small pavilion,
a water feature with fishes and aquatic plants, and a garden
with a replica of the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower erected as
the focal point. Over 60 species of Hong Kong garden plants
belonging to the plant families of Orchidaceae, Araceae and
Strelitziaceae were exhibited at the display in landscape
settings (See photograph 2).
The LCSD invited some 20
horticultural organisations and Government departments to
offer technical advice and supply relevant information for
use at the display. The Green Fun kindly contributed by providing
information for their two display boards (See photograph 3).
Mr David Lan of Green Fun also took a group of some 20 members
to visit the display on Saturday, 29 September 2001 and they
were warmly received during their visit (See photograph 4).
Many thanks for their support.

The HKSARG display was heavily patronized throughout the show period.
We received a Best Design Award and an Outstanding Contribution Award
from the Organising Committee. On behalf of the LCSD, may I take this
opportunity to thank all concerned organisations, particularly the
Green Fun, for their support, which has made the participation in
the Exposition a success.
